Pearl (Moti)

A pearl is a shiny, precious bead that comes from the inside of oysters and some other sea animals. It’s made of a shiny substance called calcium carbonate, which builds up in layers to form the pearl. Pearls are special because they look smooth and round, but they can come in different shapes too. People love pearls and use them in jewelry like necklaces and earrings. They are considered very valuable and beautiful. Pearls can be different colors like white, black, gray, pink, and blue, depending on where they come from.

Gemological Properties of Pearl

Formation: Pearls are formed inside the shells of certain species of oysters and mollusks as a defense mechanism against potentially threatening irritants such as a piece of sand.

Composition: They are composed mainly of calcium carbonate in the form of aragonite or calcite, arranged in a concentric layering manner known as nacre, which gives pearls their lustrous appearance.

Lustre: The lustre of a pearl, often referred to as its sheen or glow, is one of its most important qualities. High-quality pearls exhibit a deep, radiant luster that appears to emanate from within.

Surface Quality: The surface of a pearl should be smooth and free from blemishes such as spots, cracks, and pits. However, completely flawless natural pearls are extremely rare.

Shape: Pearls come in various shapes including round, oval, teardrop, semi-round, button, baroque (irregular shapes), and circled. Perfectly round pearls are the rarest and most valued.

Color: Pearls display a wide range of colors, from white, cream, and pink to silver, green, purple, and black. The color can affect the pearl’s value, with some colors being more prized than others depending on cultural preferences and rarity.

Size: The size of a pearl is measured in millimeters and can significantly influence its value. Larger pearls are rarer and thus more valuable.

Nacre Thickness: The thickness of the nacre affects a pearl’s quality and durability. Thicker nacre is an indicator of a high-quality pearl, as it contributes to a more lustrous and robust gem.

Refractive Index and Specific Gravity: The refractive index of nacre is approximately 1.53 – 1.69, and pearls have a specific gravity between 2.60 and 2.78.

Types of Pearls: There are several types of pearls, including natural pearls (formed without human intervention), cultured pearls (farmed with human assistance), freshwater pearls (from rivers and lakes), and saltwater pearls (from oceans).

Durability: Pearls are relatively soft compared to other gemstones, with a Mohs hardness rating of around 2.5 to 4.5. They require special care to maintain their beauty over time.

Treatment: Some pearls undergo treatments to enhance their color or luster. These treatments can include bleaching, dyeing, and coating, and they can affect the pearl’s value.

How Should Wear Pearl ?

Set in Silver: Pearls should ideally be set in silver, as silver is a metal that’s believed to enhance the moon-like qualities of the pearl. The silver setting helps in aligning the energies of the pearl with the wearer.

Wear on the Right Finger: Astrologically, pearls are often recommended to be worn on the little finger of the right hand. However, this can vary based on the advice of the astrologer, considering your specific horoscope.

Choose the Correct Day and Time: The best day to first wear a pearl ring is on a Monday, as it is the day associated with the Moon. It’s also suggested to wear it during the Shukla Paksha (the waxing phase of the Moon) for maximum benefits. The time is also crucial; morning hours (preferably within an hour of sunrise) are considered auspicious.

Purify and Activate the Pearl: Before wearing it for the first time, the pearl should be purified and energized. This can be done by washing the pearl with Ganga Jal (holy water) or fresh milk, and then praying or chanting the Moon mantra “Om Chandraya Namah” 108 times to energize the pearl.

Wear with Intention: When you wear the pearl, do it with a clear intention. Think positively about the benefits you wish to attract by wearing this gemstone.

Consult an Astrologer: Before deciding to wear a pearl, it’s advisable to consult with a knowledgeable astrologer. Pearls are not suitable for everyone according to Vedic astrology; they can bring negative effects if the Moon is unfavorably positioned in your horoscope.
